Medical Services

Bay County is home to two modern hospitals –

Gulf Coast Hospital

Gulf Coast Medical Center is recognized by the Joint Commission as a National Stroke Center of Excellence, a National Wound Care Center of Excellence, and is recognized by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer as a National Cancer Center of Excellence. In 2006, Gulf Coast Medical Center and the Gulf Coast Cancer Treatment Center developed a partnership that created the Gulf Coast Cancer Institute (GCCI). GCCI includes the medical oncologists on staff at the hospital and the radiation oncologists on staff at the Gulf Coast Cancer Treatment Center. Gulf Coast Medical Center includes a 176-bed hospital, two diagnostic centers, and three primary care clinics. Gulf Coast Medical Center is a recipient of Health Grade’s: Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence - Distinguished Hospital Award for Patient Safety - Specialty Excellence Awards for: Bariatric Surgery, - Gastrointestinal Surgery, - General Surgery, - and Pulmonary. Gulf Coast Medical Center has the area’s most comprehensive diagnostic technology. It has the region’s only comprehensive Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and has the area’s largest Pediatric Specialty Unit; more than 1,000 children a year are treated and more than 2,000 babies a year are delivered. More spine and orthopedic surgeries are performed at Gulf Coast Medical Center than any other area hospital. The hospital opened a new Cath Lab in April 2008. Its Consult-A-Nurse feature is available every day all day, providing free Physician referral and nurse consultation by calling (850) 757-3600.

Bay Medical Center

Bay Medical Center is the area’s largest and most comprehensive hospital, providing a full range of quality healthcare services since 1949. Bay Medical is currently listed among the Top 50 Hospitals in America according to a CBS News report on an independent research organization’s study. This recognition is a result of being ranked among the top 5 percent in the nation for overall clinical quality for five years in a row (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008). Bay Medical is also nationally accredited as a Center of Excellence in the treatment of heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and hip and knee replacement. As the area’s only comprehensive heart center, Bay Medical offers a full range of cardiac care and is rated number one in all of Northwest Florida for overall cardiac services. It is the only facility offering 24-hour emergency angioplasty (a life-saving procedure that is the recommended treatment for heart attack) and open-heart surgery. In the past several years, Bay Medical has invested millions of dollars in the latest technology and equipment including a Computer and Image Guided Navigational System for Brain and Spine Surgery and the Da Vinci Robot. Both of these new technologies enable

Surgeons at Bay Medical to operate through smaller incisions with greater precision which allow for better patient outcomes and faster recoveries. Bay Medical also provides comprehensive diagnostic testing at several convenient locations throughout the community.

In addition to these two fine hospitals rehabilitation centers, senior care centers, assisted living facilities, walk-in clinics, and general and specialized medical practices are abundant in Bay County.
