The City of Lynn Haven was founded on the idea of creating retirement communities for Union Army Civil War Veterans. New York Senator W.H Lynn, saw an opportunity to assist veterans in finding suitable housing. Lynn Haven is home to the only monument south of the Mason-Dixon Line honoring a Union soldier and it has been featured in Ripley's Believe It Or Not. On October 18, 1959 the monument was rededicated to the honor of all U.S. veterans who have died in battle.
Lynn Haven is a growing community of over 12,000. The town has some of the most beautiful Bay and Bayou waterfront property in the area and deep water access via North Bay to the Gulf. Lynn Haven has been able to maintain its small town appeal while continuing to grow. Also, many of the areas newer subdivisions are located in Lynn Haven. During the recent housing boom Lynn Haven experienced almost as much growth as the beach.
Lynn Haven is home to a thriving business community, which include Trane, Schwinco, IPSO, Allied Bendix and Sallie Mae.
There are seven city parks with playgrounds and sports facilities. Two golf courses one private and one with a nature walk. The city has a 60-acre sports complex, with well maintained baseball/softball fields, indoor basketball and volleyball, and a weight room
The Lynn Haven Public Library was Bay County's first library, beginning in 1911 when fourteen Lynn Haven women donated one book and three magazines and met in various homes and buildings as the Lynn Haven Literary Club. Their collection grew to 500 volumes by 1915, and in 1922 the McMullin family donated the site at 9th Street and Ohio Avenue. This donation included a building and $1000.00 for improvements and furnishings, and it became known as the McMullin Library. In 1990, the name was changed to the Lynn Haven Public Library, to honor the City of Lynn Haven's commitment. Today the collection consists of over 18,000 materials.
